ABOUT SHANNON AUSTIN
…
Shannon Austin was hit by a car 3 ½ years ago at age 14. She was volunteering at her Church Christmas Bizaar and when break time came, some kids wanted drinks from the local mini mart. Four of them crossed Trooper Road and Shannon was the last of the group. She was hit by a 19 year old on a suspended license. Shannon was airlifted to HUP where she was in intensive care for almost 2 months. She barely survived and had 19 surgical procedures in the first 6 weeks. Shannon was transferred to Moss Rehab 10 weeks after the accident. Mom and Dad finally brought Shannon home in May 2008 because Shannon showed no progress. Life had changed for the Austin family, but Shannon was home. In 2010 she had 4 additional surgeries bringing the total to about 34. Through the entire journey, Shannon has been a very sweet determined girl. Last year, three of the surgeries laid the foundation to Shannon gaining more cognitive ability (first smile in over 2 years) and for her to move her muscles more freely. The last surgery was a tendon release on both feet giving Shannon a chance at just being able to stand. Shannon has worked very hard. She goes to school, to PT, OT and Speech Therapy. The doctors are amazed at what she has accomplished. Shannon has a great support system that has played a big role in her recovery journey. The family continues to fight for nursing from the insurance company. If the insurance does not cover the cost, it comes from The Shannon Austin Fund and then the family pocket book. There is so much more to Shannon’s recovery journey. She is starting to eat pureed food, starting to speak and she can brush her hair. Although she can not always communicate, Shannon understands a lot of what goes on around her. We know there are many more years of the recovery journey. Our persistence with the medical arena our efforts to give Shannon the best opportunity possible are the driving force to giving Shannon a “New” normal. We know in our hearts, that in the coming years, Shannon will walk, talk and do what she likes to do the most, Sing.
